‘Evure in Terrace’의 클라이언트는 파리의 야외 테라스에서 느꼈던 휴식의 순간을 향수(鄕愁)할 수 있는 공간을 원했다. 40년보다 오래된 주택을 카페로 리노베이션 하는 프로젝트이며, 대상지는 구도심과 새로운 문화 허브가 충돌하고 융합하는 흥미로운 사이트이다. 국립아시아문화전당이 있어, 여러 예술가들과 비엔날레를 보러 오는 사람들의 니즈를 충족시키고자 하였고, 구도심의 평화로움은 지키고자 하였습니다.

세월을 이기지 못해 슬라브와 보강되었던 H빔들이 무너지고 있었고, 주택용도로 만들어진 구조의 열악함이 있었다. 이를 개선하기위해 대수선공사를 통한 안정성확보와 화장실위치를 조정하여 코어를 새로 만들었다. 80년대에 지어진 한국의 조적조건물을 유럽건축물처럼 보이기위해 건물에 규칙을 부여하였다.

연속되는 아치창을 만들었으며, 2층의 아치 창과 1층의 창을 같은 컬러의 캐노피로 자연스럽게 연결해 시각적으로 하나의 입면처럼 보이도록 연출하였다. 이는 유럽 건축 특유의 수직성을 모티브로 삼았다. 유럽 건축의 엄격한 정형성을 따르면서도 동시에 변주를 주기 위해, 메인 출입구의 스케일은 과감히 확대했다. 외부의 제작조명은 유럽의 장식적인 요소를 반영하였으며, 아치창과 어우러지게 수직적인 구조로 리듬을 만들었다. 건물 1층 외벽에 벤치와 티 테이블을 구성하여, 건물구조가 가구로 될 수 있게 하였고 외부에서 지나가는 행인들도 잠시 걸터앉아 공간을 느낄 수 있도록 계획했다.

1층 내부는 바닥마감재에 변화를 주어 좌석과 이동 동선을 분리했으며, 바테이블 가구에선 장식적인 요소를 살렸다. 아치 천장은 층고를 최대한 확보하며 공간을 아늑하게 감싸도록 하였다. 주물로 만들어진 가구 손잡이와 거울장식들은 손때가 탈수록 빛이 나고 앤틱함을 올려주었다. 2층 실내는 1층보다는 한층 밝은 우드 톤으로 점차 밝아지는 변화를 주었으며, 벽체 몰딩과 바닥 타일의 간격을 맞추어 정형성을 만들었다.

2층 테라스에서는 공간에 의도적인 반전을 주어, 자유로운 유선형의 야외 테이블을 배치함으로써 다채로운 시퀀스와 동선을 경험할 수 있도록 디자인했다. 유선형 테이블 곳곳에는 나무와 갈대, 꽃들이 식재되어 있어 내외부의 경계를 허물고자 했다. 큰 아치창으로 나아갔을 때는 은행나무가 맞이하고 있으며 건너편의 하늘정원과 5.18민주 항쟁이 있었던 역사현장을 조망할 수 있다. 3층 루프탑에 진입해서는 최소한의 난간으로 오픈 된 공간을 느낄 수 있으며 파라솔과 야외 가구들로 휴양할 수 있게 하였다.

완성된 공간은 세대를 아우르며 누구나 이용할 수 있고 1인부터 다인까지 인원수에 상관없이 대화, 휴식, 업무를 가지각색의 형태로 머무를 수 있었다.

Evure In Terrace

The client envisioned a space that evokes nostalgia for the relaxing moments spent on Parisian outdoor terraces. This project creates a dialogue between the past and present, renovating a residence that is over 40 years old. The site sits at an intriguing intersection where the Old Town and a new Cultural Hub collide and fuse. With the Asia Culture Center (ACC) nearby, the design aims to satisfy the needs of visiting artists and Biennale attendees while simultaneously preserving the tranquility of the existing old downtown fabric.

Before the intervention, the existing building faced severe deterioration; the slabs and H-beam reinforcements installed over time were collapsing, and the original residential structure was structurally poor. To resolve this, we secured structural stability through extensive major repair work (Daesuseon) and relocated the restrooms to create a new Core, significantly improving the building's functionality and safety.

To transform the 1980s Korean masonry building into a structure with a European atmosphere, we imposed strict architectural rules on the facade. We designed continuous arch windows and visually connected the second-floor arches with the first-floor windows using canopies of the same color. This strategy emphasizes verticality, a key motif in European architecture. While following this strict regularity, we boldly expanded the scale of the Main Entrance to introduce a variation. The exterior custom lighting reflects European decorative elements, creating a rhythm that harmonizes with the vertical structure of the arch windows. Furthermore, we integrated benches and tea tables into the first-floor exterior wall, allowing the building structure itself to function as furniture. This gesture invites passersby to sit and experience the space, engaging directly with the streetscape.

Stepping inside, the First Floor utilizes changes in floor finishes to distinctively separate seating areas from circulation paths. The bar table emphasizes decorative elements, while the arch ceiling maximizes floor-to-ceiling height to wrap the space in a cozy atmosphere. We utilized cast iron for furniture handles and mirror decorations; these elements are designed to gain luster and patina with human touch, enhancing the antique mood over time. The Second Floor transitions to a brighter wood tone, creating a lighter ambiance than the ground floor. Here, we aligned the spacing of wall moldings with the floor tiles to establish a sense of formal stability and regularity.

The experience culminates in the outdoor spaces, where the Second Floor Terrace offers an intentional spatial twist. By placing free-flowing, streamlined (curvilinear) outdoor tables, we designed the space to offer a diverse sequence and dynamic movement, contrasting with the rigid interior. Plants such as trees, reeds, and flowers are embedded within these curved tables to blur the boundary between interior and exterior. Looking out through the large arch windows, visitors are greeted by Ginkgo trees and can view the Sky Park across the street, as well as the historic site of the 5.18 Democratic Uprising. Finally, the Rooftop on the third floor features minimal railings to maximize the sense of openness, with parasols and outdoor furniture arranged to provide a resort-like relaxation experience.

The completed Evure In Terrace embraces all generations. It has become a flexible space where anyone—from individuals to large groups—can stay, converse, rest, or work in their own way, bridging the gap between the city's past and its vibrant cultural present.
